Steel tariffs

Following the announcement by United States that Britain and the rest of the European Union will face 25 per cent steel tariffs and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminium imports, Labour MEP Alex Mayer said:

“The position of Donald Trump is absurd but also deeply worrying. There is simply no reason to provoke a transatlantic trade conflict when US concerns relate to the over capacity of steel and aluminium on Asian markets - not high quality UK steel.

“President Trump can’t be allowed to get away with bullying his trading partners.”

The European Union has reacted swiftly launching legal proceedings against the US at the WTO today and producing a 10-page list of products including sweetcorn, cranberries, tobacco, makeup, clothing, and a long list of steel products which they will put tit-for-tat tariffs on.

Ms Mayer added:

“The swift and unanimous reaction across Europe today shows that Britain is so much stronger as part of the world’s largest single market bargaining as part of a bloc with the weight of the 500million strong consumers.”
