Ms Mayer joined local people in Bedford at short ceremony at 10am at the Anne Frank Tree in Russell Park, Bedford during which the Kaddish will be recited and a candle lit, before a commemoration featuring readings by Polish school children and officials along with songs and music.

Ms Mayer also called for commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust, in particular to mark the 75th anniversary of the Babi Yar tragedy where more than 1.3 million Jewish people were executed, in a Written Declaration of the European Parliament.WP_20170127_11_33_45_Pro.jpg

Ms Mayer said “Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us of the horrors that can happen when hatred goes unopposed and only by working together with hope, not hate, can we protect future generations from such tragedy.

“It is on days like this when we can reflect on how far Europe has come from those dark days over seventy years ago. European co-operation has brought about peace, stability and mutual respect, let us never forget."
