MEP deeply concerned at disappearance of murdered Cambridge student Giulio Regeni’s lawyer

A Cambridge MEP has expressed deep concern at the news that the lawyer representing murdered Cambridge PhD student Giulio Regeni has "disappeared."

The Girton student was brutally tortured and murdered in Cairo in 2016 while conducting research into independent trade union activity. His killers have still not been brought to justice.

Giulio’s lawyer, Ibrahim Metawly “disappeared” at an Egyptian airport whilst on his way to a United Nations meeting in Geneva. The president of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedom says Ibrahim Metawly was planning to speak about Giulio's case and has accused the Egyptian Government of trying to “gag” him.

Alex Mayer MEP who is Labour’s foreign affairs and human rights spokesperson in the European Parliament said:

"I am deeply concerned by the reports that lawyer Ibrahim Metawly was arrested yesterday. A prominent lawyer cannot just be allowed to vanish at an airport. The European Parliament is putting pressure on the Egyptians for the immediate and unconditional release of Ibrahim Metwally and I urge the British Government to follow suit."
