Bee harming pesticides will be banned from all fields within six months thanks to a European ruling today.
The step has been taken to protect bees that are vital to pollinate flowers and crops.
The number of bees in England has halved over the last twenty years due to loss of habitat, climate change, invasive species and harmful neonicotinoid pesticides. Bees perform about 80 percent of all pollination worldwide, and a single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers each day.
Labour’s Ms Mayer said: “I’m delighted at the ban. Bees are vital and the decline in our buzzing pollinators meant there is no way we could just carry on bumble-ing along. I welcome these tough new measures.”
