May’s Offer On Citizens’ Rights Is Vague And A Year Late

Theresa May’s offer today on EU citizens’ rights has come a year too late and is still too vague, East of England Labour MEP Alex Mayer has said.

Ms Mayer said: “This is a vague, less-than-comprehensive offer – and shows a mean spirited Prime Minister is still not listening.

“Looking at the small print, the government's offer is full of holes and threatens the rights of both EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens in other EU countries. It will create yet further uncertainty.

“The other European countries have made an early straight forward and generous offer. Why couldn't the Tory Government take Jeremy Corbyn's lead and do the same? Instead the three million EU citizens currently resident in the UK will see a reduction in their rights compared to now, which in turn puts the rights of the 1.2 million British citizens who live in the rest of Europe at risk."
