Hertford Campaigners Petition Government To Save 50,000 Jobs

Hertford Open BritainHertford campaigners from the pressure group Open Britain were joined by Alex Mayer, Labour MEP for the East of England as they took to the streets as part of a national day of action to campaign for Britain to stay in the Single Market.

Ms Mayer joined a cross party street stall in Hertford on Saturday 2nd September encouraging local shoppers to sign an Open Britain petition.

Ms Mayer slammed the lies of the Leave campaign during the European referendum campaign who said that the UK would remain in the Single Market.

Ms Mayer said "I'm angry because during the referendum in hustings after hustings if I mentioned some of the benefits of our membership of the European Union like membership of the Single Market, Leave campaigners just replied that we could negotiate to keep that part. It is clear that the British public was lied to.”

An estimated 50,000 jobs in Hertfordshire are dependent on the Single Market with independent analyses of the economic consequences showing staying in offers the greatest opportunities for trade, investment, jobs and growth and doing the least damage to the UK economy.

Ms Mayer added “I encourage everyone to show your support by signing online at the Open Britain website http://www.open-britain.co.uk/single_market_petition
