Cambridge MEP Urges Local Residents To Vote For Ninja Stars

Alex Mayer MEP meets Melina Juergens star actor of Golden Joystick nominated computer game Hellblade.

A Cambridge-based gaming company is in the running for two prizes at the annual games industry Oscars, the "Golden Joystick Awards" and MEP Alex Mayer is urging Cambridge residents to cast their votes for the Milton Road based gaming company to win.

Euro MP Alex Mayer visited the studio to join in the celebration of their nominations and praise the international team of designers and engineers behind the success.

Ninja Theory is nominated for the ‘Studio of Year’ and ‘Audio of the Year’ awards following the release of their successful game Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice.

Ms Mayer said: “The technology and data industry is truly flourishing here in Cambridge, and companies like Ninja Theory are a credit to our city. Two award nominations is testament to how we are currently at the cutting-edge of gaming tech innovation."

The Labour MEP will play the game, battling demons with a sword covered in runes, before discussing the challenges of Brexit and the priorities for the gaming industry. The gaming sector is worth £4.3 billion to the British economy. Top on the list of Brexit concerns is the importance of ensuring the free flow of data between the UK and EU after March 2019 and how to avoid a skills shortage.

A recent study by Ukie, the industry’s trade body, found 57% of UK games companies employ workers from the EU, and that at those companies EU workers represent an average one third of all employees. Some 98% of those surveyed believe EU nationals who have the necessary skills should be given the right to work in the UK in the future.

Alex Mayer MEP continued: “The tech industry is thriving in Cambridge and I'm delighted to get behind Ninja Theory's quest for an award. But past success is no guarantee for the future. This is an industry reliant on highly skilled, creative, international talent and rules about data that cross borders. It is vital we seek to mitigate some of the problems Brexit will bring.”
