Alex Mayer MEP calls on Myanmar to stop deadly assaults on Rohingya

Alex Mayer MEP today called for action to ensure Myanmar immediately ceases its deadly assaults on the Rohingya.

Ms Mayer, Labour’s spokesperson on Foreign Affairs in the European Parliament, welcomed a vote by MEPs condemning the attacks on the Rohingya in Rakhine state calling for an immediate cessation of the attacks.

Ms Mayer said “The unspeakable atrocities committed against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar have been described by the UN rights chief as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

“Villages are being burnt to the ground and widespread extrajudicial killings and torture are taking place. This has lead to more than 300,000 people fleeing to Bangladesh, with more trapped on a mine-riddled border.

“The international community needs to move more swiftly - we need urgent action now. We need to support humanitarian efforts and confront the Myanmar authorities. Military and security forces must immediately cease the killings, harassment and rape of the Rohingya people.

“It is shameful to see Aung San Suu Kyi turning her back whilst genocide occurs, this should not be the reaction of a Nobel prize laureate.

“No more women should be raped, no more children tortured and no more villages burnt. This genocide and ethnic cleansing must stop.”
